Mercedes-Benz is investing $1 billion to scale up its Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging network in North America with US partner Alpitronic. The 100% clean energy network will be built by local workers and US-made Alpitronic Hypercharger 400s, creating a more reliable EV charging network than current alternatives.

Mercedes-Benz is investing $1 billion to scale up its Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging (HPC) network in North America. The 100% clean energy network will be built by local workers in partnership with Alpitronic, targeting uptimes above 99%. The chargers will be US-made Alpitronic Hypercharger 400 units, which meet President Biden’s Made-in-America requirements for federal funding.

Current North American charging networks have been built by a variety of companies, including EV automaker Tesla and charging network builder Electrify America. A variety of charging standards are in use – traditionally, CHAdeMO (Japanese makers), CCS (American and European makers), NACS (Tesla), and GB/T (China) - but adoption of standards is fluid and changing. Both factors have resulted in charger market fragmentation and frustrations for EV owners.

President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law has created a $5 billion National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program (NEVI) to expand America’s EV charging infrastructure using only made-in-America charging equipment under the Buy America implementation plan. Alpitronic is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, and will manufacture the Hypercharger 400 at its Wisconsin plant.

Mercedes will use the American-made Hyperchargers in its 100% clean energy HPC network to provide up to 400 kW high-speed charging to significantly reduce waits. On the other hand, Tesla is manufacturing thousands of Superchargers in China today, and the Supercharger network does not use 100% clean energy and only provides 250 kW charging (which can take a Tesla Model 3 about half an hour to charge from 10-80% or over an hour from 0-100%). Those bored to death waiting for their EVs to charge at 250 kW chargers can play hundreds of classic video games instead.

Mercedes is hoping that its deep operations experience can create a network with better uptime while providing a better experience than alternatives. For example, current EV drivers frequently encounter chargers that are broken or are simply frozen out of operation.

The Hyperchargers will support both CCS and NACS connectors and will be available starting in the third quarter of 2024 at select HPC locations. Readers itching to become EV and hybrid vehicle technicians can read up on the technology.

NEW YORK, June 13, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging announced today an agreement with Alpitronic America, Inc. (Alpitronic) ensuring that it will become the first DC fast-charging network in the United States to deploy Alpitronic's HYC 400 (Hypercharger 400) at scale. Working with Alpitronic is one way that Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging is localizing its supply chain as part of its $1 billion investment into a North American charging network. Together, the two companies are bolstering investment in the clean energy and transportation economy to deliver a fast-charging network capable of supporting EV drivers from all brands.

In November 2023, Alpitronic opened its US corporate headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina, with the capacity to support over 300 jobs. The Hypercharger 400s that Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging will deploy are produced domestically at a facility in Wisconsin. The Hypercharger 400 offers customers a reliable experience with up to 400kW charging and support for a wide output voltage range. The first units will be available at Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging sites beginning in Q3 2024. Both CCS and NACS cables will be available across the network later this year.
