According to a new report, Google could become the first OEM to offer devices with the Samsung Exynos Modem 5400. Allegedly, the Exynos 5400 modem will arrive in this year's Pixel 9 series, which is now rumoured to contain four models by way of the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL and Pixel 9 Pro Fold, as well as a future 5G Pixel tablet codenamed 'clementine'.

Kamila Wojciechowska has provided various details about the state of Google's next flagship Pixel smartphone releases. To recap, it was assumed until recently that Google would follow its usual twin flagship release strategy with the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro. Adjunct to that would be a Pixel Fold (curr. $899 renewed on Amazon) successor, renders and hands-on photos of which surfaced in February.

However, @OnLeaks subsequently threw this assumption out the window with another set of renders showing a third candy bar Pixel smartphone. The leaker added that this Pixel 9 would be joined by the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL, which Wojciechowska now reinforces. Allegedly, the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL will be joined by a fourth Pixel 9 series smartphone though, to confuse matters further.

Specifically, Wojciechowska claims that Google has switched the development of 'comet' from the Pixel Fold 2 to the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Thus, the Pixel 9 series is now rumoured to arrive as follows:

Retail name Codename
Pixel 9 Tokay
Pixel 9 Pro Caiman
Pixel 9 Pro Fold Comet
Pixel 9 Pro XL Komodo

While Wojciechowska stresses that 'Pixel 9 Pro Fold' may not be the final name for 'comet', 'it is what Google is using at the moment' within 'software built for Google's 2024 devices'. The same leaker reports that these devices will feature a new modem, albeit one still produced by Samsung's Exynos division. Reportedly, Google has settled on the Exynos Modem 5400, a 3GPP Release 17 5G modem that will run alongside the Tensor G4 chipset.

In theory, the Exynos Modem 5400 should furnish the Pixel 9 series with satellite connectivity, although Samsung does not mention this in its press release. At any rate, Wojciechowska hints that this modem will also underpin a next-generation Pixel Tablet with 5G connectivity codenamed 'clementine'. For now, all Pixel 9 series smartphones are expected to land in autumn 2024. In the meantime, Google will release the Pixel 8a in four colours, including a striking new green option
