Geekom XT12 Pro review: Stylish NUC mini-PC alternative with Intel Core i9-12900H, 32 GB DDR4 RAM and 1 TB SSD
As the Geekom XT12 Pro, the mini-PC should score points with outstanding performance and good efficiency. However, Geekom only installs an Intel Core i9-12900H. However, the SoC belongs to the Alder Lake-H series and was introduced two years ago. More on how the processor performs in the current duel later. After all, Geekom is using the top model here, even though no other configurations are currently available. With 32 GB RAM and a 1 TB SSD, the device is currently available for 749 euros. This already includes a discount, as the manufacturer's RRP is listed at 899 euros. Whether this pricing is justified is a legitimate question, which we will shed light on after taking a look at the performance compared to its competitors. Due to the price, however, the manufacturer is already setting the bar very high for itself.

Geekom XT12 Pro in detail
Case - Metal and plastic perfectly finished
The Geekom XT12 Pro is extremely compact and combines a lot of technology in a very small space. The XT12 Pro only needs 11.7 x 11.2 centimeters on the desk. The choice of materials is a mix of metal and plastic. The latter is used for the lid, although the stability does not suffer as a result. Nevertheless, the Geekom A7 still looked a little more premium. The metal case has an excellent finish and can be opened from the underside. Geekom also uses this to cool the mass storage devices. In terms of color, the Geekom XT12 Pro is only available in silver and white. The manufacturer can't deny its similarity to the Intel NUC 13 Pro Desk Edition Kit. Geekom claims that even though the devices look nearly identical, they are actually using an in-house design.
The Geekom XT12 can be attached to a monitor using the supplied VESA mount.
Connectivity - Many options and 2x USB4
Geekom has provided the XT12 Pro with many useful external interfaces. These are spread across the front and rear. Four USB-A and two UBS-C sockets are more than sufficient and should cover all needs. The Type-C ports also support USB4, which expands the possible uses of the XT12 Pro almost limitlessly with the right accessories. Screens can be connected directly via HDMI, but also USB4. This means that the mini-PC can be operated with four screens at the same time. A network connection is also available.
Communication
The Geekom XT12 Pro uses the same wireless module as the Geekom A7. The MediaTek Wi-Fi 6E MT7922 WLAN module does not achieve the best values but is sufficient for data transmission in normal use. If possible, the 6 GHz frequency range should primarily be used. The difference in performance compared to the somewhat slower 5 GHz frequency range is already noticeable when transferring a lot of data. Alternatively, the Geekom XT12 Pro can also handle a wired network connection. Data rates of up to 2.5 GBit/s are possible here.
Accessories
The Geekom XT12 Pro comes with everything you need. In addition to the 120-watt power supply unit, there is also a VESA mount in the box. An HDMI cable and the obligatory thank you card from Geekom are also included.
Maintenance
The Geekom XT12 Pro can be opened without any major problems: four easily accessible screws secure the base plate to the housing. Once these have been loosened, the base plate and SSD cooler can be removed. Due to the heat conducting pads, you should be a little careful here. The RAM and mass storage are then easily accessible. Another SSD can be accommodated in the device itself. However, only SATA SSDs with a length of 42 millimeters can be installed here.
Performance - Intel Core i9-12900H has 14 cores with 20 threads
The Geekom XT12 Pro is only available in the version we tested. The Intel Core i9-12900H provides a very solid basis for mastering even performance-hungry tasks. Together with the 32 GB RAM and the 1 TB SSD, you are well-equipped for the time being.
Test conditions
For all performance tests with the Geekom XT12 Pro, we use the "maximum performance" power plan. There were only deviations from this in the power consumption and noise measurements according to our Test criteria.
Processor
The Intel Core i9-12900H is based on the Alder Lake architecture and combines 6P and 8E cores. Together, this provides the user with 20 threads. Even after more than two years, the SoC is still not outdated, and in comparison, we see a reasonable gap to the more modern AMD Ryzen APUs.
In terms of power limits, Geekom limits the Intel Core i9-12900H to a maximum of 80 watts, although 35 watts are permanently available. However, we did not reach the maximum value at any time. We can already state this at this point. In the test, we often only see around 60 watts, which means the manufacturer is not exploiting the full potential here. Nevertheless, the SoC is operated in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications, as 35 watts are permanently available. In the duel with the competitors, our test sample often has to admit defeat. The same picture can be seen in the AIDA64 benchmarks. The disadvantage of the older DDR4 memory becomes apparent here.
You can find more benchmarks for the processors here.

Geekom XT12 Pro on the Cinebench R15 multi-loop
In the Cinebench R15 continuous loop, we can see that Geekom has installed a relatively low-performance cooling unit here. Only at the beginning can the Intel Core i9-12900H deliver a significantly better result. From the second run onwards, the performance drops significantly, which means that our test sample is only in the penultimate place.
System performance
The Geekom XT12 Pro masters the system performance tests quite well, and in comparison to the pure CPU tests, we now even see our test sample in the midfield. Nevertheless, this shows the disadvantage that DDR4 now has compared to DDR5: all DDR4-based systems follow the faster DDR5-equipped mini-PCs by a clear margin, of which the Geekom A7 was the best performer.

DPC latencies
We were not able to document any increased latencies on the Geekom XT12 Pro when surfing the Internet. Only when playing the 4K test video did the latencies climb. However, our test sample only reached the maximum value under full load with Prime95. Nevertheless, the XT12 Pro can be used as a streaming client, as there were no dropped frames at any time.

Mass storage
Geekom installed an SSD with 1 TB storage space from Lexar in our test sample. In principle, the installed SSD performs adequately as long as there is no continuous load. This is where the Lexar SSD has problems, which lead to the performance having to be significantly throttled. The main problem here is incorrectly attached thermal pads, as both are not where they should be. We have fitted the missing area with a thermal pad of the same thickness, which resolved the problem. We have informed the manufacturer so that they can rectify this. According to Geekom, this problem is being addressed and future batches should then be fitted with correctly installed thermal pads. According to our research, this problem does not only seem to affect our device.
Two SSDs can be installed in the Geekom XT12 Pro. However, attention must be paid to the form factor here, as the second M.2 slot only supports SATA SSDs with a length of 42 millimeters.

Graphics
The Intel Iris Xe Graphics G7 is responsible for 3D calculations and image output. With 96 EUs, it is the fastest model in the series. Nevertheless, it is now an old model that is noticeably inferior to its competitors. Intel only updated the architecture of its iGPUs with the Meteor Lake generation. As an example, you can take a look at the results of the Acemagic F2A. But even this was inferior to the powerful iGPUs from AMD. Geekom itself has come up with the A7 - an extremely compact device in its portfolio, which is equipped with an AMD Radeon 780M and has significantly more performance than the Geekom XT12 Pro.

Gaming performance
The Intel Iris Xe iGPU is often overwhelmed by most games. The Geekom XT12 Pro usually only achieves playable frame rates in low resolutions and the lowest preset. In the performance comparison with the competitors, we also see that the performance of the iGPU in the Geekom XT12 Pro is on par with the Khadas Mind and the Minisforum NAD9. However, to get a little more 3D performance, the only option is to use an external graphics card, which can be connected via USB4.

Emissions - Not very quiet, but quite economical
Noise emissions
Unfortunately, the Geekom XT12 Pro is not one of the quietest devices. The device only works with little noise when idling, and only a quiet fan noise is audible. This changes under load, as the mini-PC is clearly audible at up to 44.2 dB(A). We were even able to measure up to 47.2 dB(A) during gaming. However, we couldn't detect a permanently high sound pressure level during gaming. Here, the result fluctuated between 39 and 47.2 dB(A).

Temperature
The Geekom XT12 Pro heats up noticeably under load. The top heats up significantly more than the bottom of the mini-PC. The documented temperatures are all within a reasonable range and give no cause for concern. The Intel Core i9-12900H itself is somewhat different. However, the XT12 Pro only reaches these high values for a short time. Under continuous load, the SoC's power consumption drops to 35 watts, causing the processor's temperature to level off at just over 80 °C on average. This means that the SoC operates within Intel's specifications, although the Turbo utilization is very low due to the small cooling unit.
To get to the bottom of the high temperature, we disassembled the cooler once after the tests to rule out a problem with the thermal paste. We couldn't actually find a problem here, and even the new thermal paste couldn't ensure lower hot spot temperatures under load.
(-) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 47.5 °C / 118 F, compared to the average of 35.3 °C / 96 F, ranging from 26 to 69.5 °C for the class Mini PC.
(+) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 39.9 °C / 104 F, compared to the average of 36.6 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 30.7 °C / 87 F, compared to the device average of 32 °C / 90 F.
Power consumption
Geekom itself describes the XT12 Pro as a very efficient and economical mini-PC. For the most part, we can actually agree with this, although the energy consumption in idle mode does not quite match the thesis. Almost identical values were also achieved by the Intel NUC 13 in our test. On the other hand, Geekom shows that things can be different when we look at the comparison with the A7 here. At the peak, however, we only see a restrained 87.8 watts, which makes our test sample quite economical. Under average load, the energy requirement drops to around 53 watts, which is also a good result. The power supply is provided by a small power supply unit with 120 watts. The power of the power supply unit is somewhat oversized; a 90-watt power supply unit would have been sufficient here.

Verdict - Premium price, but only solid performance
The Geekom XT12 Pro is undoubtedly a powerful mini-PC. The Intel Core i9-12900H is no longer one of the latest CPUs, but it can still keep up with its more modern competitors in terms of CPU performance. The biggest disadvantage that the Geekom XT12 Pro currently has is its 3D performance. Newer models based on the Meteor Lake series can deliver significantly better performance thanks to the revised iGPU. The same also applies to AMD's Radeon 780M. Those who are not dependent on this can easily overlook this. Geekom does an excellent job with the workmanship. There is also nothing to complain about when it comes to the choice of materials.
The Geekom XT12 Pro is a powerful mini-PC and impresses with its great features. However, the price-performance ratio is not one of the Geekom XT12 Pro's strong points.
The Geekom XT12 Pro is particularly impressive with its good selection of external interfaces. Two USB4 sockets are more than what most competitors offer. After all, the low 3D performance can be noticeably increased with the right accessories. The remaining features, which include 32 GB DDR4 RAM and a 1 TB SSD, are good and round off the overall package nicely. Opinions can be divided when it comes to efficiency, as we see comparatively high values in idle mode in our test sample, which tarnishes the overall picture somewhat. After all, the manufacturer is advertising a particularly efficient device here. We don't want to completely deny this with the Geekom XT12 Pro, because under load the mini-PC shows that it can be economical. Whether this is intentional or a result of the small cooling unit, we'll leave that for now.
Finally, let's take another look at the purchase price: Geekom quotes an RRP of 899 euros for the XT12 Pro, but this is often hardly ever the case, as there are always special offers. This means that you currently have to fork out 749 euros for the Geekom XT12 Pro in our test configuration. In relation to other mini-PCs, the current purchase price is quite high. For the same price, you can also get the Geekom A7 with AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS, which certainly delivers better performance than the XT12 Pro from this review. This is where Geekom gets in its own way a little and makes the XT12 Pro unattractive. Compared to the Geekom A7, the Geekom XT12 Pro should therefore be significantly cheaper to buy in order to arouse interest.
