Every iPhone to be charged with green energy by 2030: Apple gives update on sustainability initiative
Apple made headlines back in 2018 when it announced that the company's own facilities would become completely CO₂-free. In a further step, the company has set itself the goal of powering the entire supply chain with sustainable energy by 2030. To this end, Apple has just published an interim summary.
Important interim goals have already been achieved, Apple claims, stating that its own activities and the supply chain are currently supplied with 18 gigawatts of renewable electricity, which represents a tripling of the amount from 2020. In total, 95% of direct suppliers are said to be in the process of transitioning to the full use of clean energy. However, the company did not specify the proportion of "direct suppliers" in Apple's entire supply chain.
By the end of the decade, the company also aims to offset all fresh water withdrawal from so-called "high impact sites" and to replenish groundwater sources and rivers. Moreover, the Californian company is not only aiming to focus on its own operations, but also plans to offset all energy required by Apple products worldwide through sustainable energy production by 2030. To this end, the company is investing heavily in projects to generate electricity from renewable sources.
Apple share price weakens
However, the timing of this publication is unlikely to be coincidental. On the one hand, we are discovering new leaks about the iPhone 16 and iOS 18 every day, which may well be attempts to facilitate positive news reporting in order to bring the brand back into the spotlight. On the other hand, the company could be reacting to recent events on the stock market, which have seen Apple shares plummet in recent days after it was announced that iPhone sales had fallen by almost 10% in the first quarter.
