Epicore Biosystems has unveiled the Connected Hydration wearable system to monitor worker hydration to help prevent heat-related illnesses. Employees exposed to hot work environments or under heavy physical exertion can lose a dangerous amount of water from their bodies, and this system helps remind them to hydrate proactively.

Employees exposed to hot work environments or under heavy physical exertion can lose a dangerous amount of water from their bodies, and this system helps monitor their sweat loss and remind them to hydrate proactively.

The patch collects raw data on sweat loss, electrolyte loss, temperature, thermal flux, and motion using multiple biosensors, which is processed by machine learning algorithms trained on hundreds of thousands of real-world data points. Users are alerted to hydrate via haptic feedback. Collected data is pushed to the mobile app over a Bluetooth connection before being sent to the cloud for predictive data analysis, employee tracking, and reporting across multiple work sites. The cloud is SOC 2 Type 2 compliant in protecting client data.

The patch is rated Class I (flammable gases and vapors present), Division 1 (flammables frequently present) for use in hazardous environments and has many similar certifications. The flexible patch is powered by a coin battery with a runtime of over 1,000 hours, and Epicore provides free battery swaps. The reusable, electronic module, measuring 6.6 x 3.0 x 1.0 cm (0.39 x 1.2 x 0.39 in.) and weighing 22 gr (0.78 oz.), docks into the single-use sensor patch, measuring 9.4 x 4.8 x 0.076 cm (3.7 x 1.9 x 0.03 in.).
