Apple's upcoming M4 SoC might break tradition with its early debut at Apple's 'Let Loose' event, arriving just six months after its predecessor
In the latest edition of his 'Power On' newsletter, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has made a rather intriguing claim regarding Apple's upcoming OLED iPad Pro models, set to be revealed during the company's upcoming 'Let Loose' event on May 7th. According to him, these new models will sport Apple's yet-to-be-released M4 chip, bypassing the M3.
This information comes as a genuine surprise given that Apple introduced the M3 chip just last October, a mere 7 months ago. Such a quick generational leap would mark the fastest update cycle in Apple silicon's history. Typically, Apple has stuck to an 18-month cycle for 'M' series chips and a 12-month cycle for the 'A' series. It doesn't just end there - If true, this will also mark the first time Apple introduces an 'M' series chip in an iPad rather than a MacBook. However, with no new MacBooks anticipated any time before October, recent buyers of Apple's M3-powered MacBook Pros (starting from $1,499 on Amazon) have narrowly escaped a major dose of buyer's remorse.
While Gurman has not yet revealed any specific details regarding the rumored M4 chip, he did mention a significant update: an upgraded neural engine.
This particular improvement is expected to majorly enhance the upcoming iPad Pro's AI capabilities, which the company plans to market as an 'AI-powered device'. This development is noteworthy, especially considering the plethora of rumors hinting at iOS 18 packing numerous new AI features. However, given that iOS 18 is expected to arrive no sooner than WWDC in June, it will be interesting to see how Apple justifies marketing the iPad Pro as an AI-powered device even before iOS 18 breaks ground.
