MagyarApple iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini sport A14 Bionic, 5G, and a US$30 surcharge for non-AT&T and non-Verizon customers
Apple's October event included several new iPhone 12 models. The iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 12 feature Apple's latest tech including the A14 Bionic SoC, 5G connectivity, and Super Retina XDR OLED displays. All iPhone 12 models have a display coating, which Apple calls the Ceramic Shield.
Ceramic Shield, developed by Corning, is apparently the "world's first transparent and color-free glass-ceramic" designed to offer a much tougher screen resistant to drops. Both the iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 12 are IP68 rated for water resistance up to six meters for 30 minutes.
iPhone 12
The iPhone 12 resembles the iPhone 11 in many ways including the display size and overall similar design. However, Apple's latest iteration of the iPhone brings with it several firsts. The display now sports a 2532x1170 resolution with a 460 ppi pixel density and has a peak brightness of 1,200 nits making it ideal for HDR content.The iPhone 12 now features a flat edge design similar to the iPhone 4 of yore and the new iPad Pro and iPad Air.
The cameras on the new iPhone 12 are part of a dual-12 MP camera system enclosed in a squircle at the back. The ultra-wide camera has a 5P lens arrangement with an f/2.4 aperture and a 120-degree field of view while the wide angle camera is a 7P lens has an f/1.6 aperture with 2x optical zoom. According to Apple, several computational features have been incorporated into the iPhone 12's camera processing to better low light and faster Deep Fusion performance.
The iPhone 12 is also the first iPhone to completely shoot HDR video with Dolby Vision and enables full Dolby Vision compatibility right from capture to edit and sharing.
iPhone 12 Mini
The iPhone 12 Mini is being touted by Apple as the smallest and lightest 5G smartphone. The iPhone 12 Mini sports a largely similar spec sheet as the iPhone 12 but comes with a 5.4-inch screen with no Touch ID. The iPhone 12 Mini also uses the same Apple A14 Bionic SoC as the iPhone 12 and the same camera system and Ceramic Shield on the display.
Both the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini offer Apple's new MagSafe connector and will be available in 64 GB, 128 GB, and 256 GB internal storage capacities. Color options include Black, White, Product Red, Green, and Blue.
The iPhone 12 Mini starts from US$699 with pre-orders starting from November 6 5 AM PT and ships on November 13. The iPhone 12 will start retailing at US$799 with pre-orders starting on October 16 5 AM PT and availability from October 23.
Do note that this pricing is only for Verizon and AT&T customers. Unlocked phones on other carriers will cost US$30 extra.
