Apple is rolling out new versions of Final Cut Pro for Macs and Final Cut Pro for iPad, which include a bevy of new features. Primary among them is support for up to 4 live camera feeds on the iPad version, which can turn an iPad into a director's hub to manage multiple camera angles at once.

Apple today announced new versions of its film editing software, Final Cut Pro. Updates are coming to both the Mac and iPad apps that bring a bunch of new features for content creation.

The highlighted feature is Live Multicam, which turns an iPad into a hub that can link to and monitor up to four live video feeds. Users can connect up to four iPhones or iPads running Apple's new Final Cut Camera app (more on that below) and send the feed to a central iPad. From there, directors can not only monitor the video feeds but also adjust settings like zoom, focus, and exposure (in addition to others). The app also pulls preview clips from the video feeds that can be edited, and the full resolution files will be transferred in the background.

Final Cut Pro for iPad 2 also supports external storage devices and includes 12 new color-grading presets, new text titles, 20 new built-in soundtracks, and new dynamic backgrounds.

To use Live Multicam, each connected iPhone or iPad will need to run Apple's Final Cut Camera app, which is a free video-taking app coming later this spring. Final Cut Camera brings a bevy of manual controls to an iPhone's or iPad's video recording. These include adjusting ISO, shutter speed, focus peaking, and monitoring tools like zebras and audio levels. While Final Cut Camera is intended for use with Final Cut Pro for iPad 2, it can be used as a standalone video recording app.

On the Mac side of things, Final Cut Pro for Mac 10.8 brings a few new features, including new AI tools. These include the ability to enhance light and color in a scene while adjusting contrast, color balance, and brightness all in one go. Final Cut Pro can also use AI to generate mid-frames with Smooth Slo-Mo to fill out a slow motion scene. Users can also name custom video effects and corrections and drag them onto the timeline so they can more easily identify edits they've made.

Final Cut Pro for iPad 2 will be available later this spring for $4.99 per month or $49 per year. Final Cut Pro 10.8 for Mac will be available as a free update for current owners and will be available for purchase for $299.99 from the Mac App Store.
